What Is a Tooth Extraction?

Dr. Graham recommends tooth extraction for patients in the advanced stages of tooth decay and periodontal disease. The benefit of tooth extraction is that the procedure not only addresses the problems with the extracted tooth, but also protects the surrounding teeth, gums, and bone from developing the same problems. Dr. Graham may also recommend tooth extraction to alleviate problems associated with the overcrowding caused by excess teeth.

What Is the Procedure for a Tooth Extraction?

We understand that losing teeth is a difficult experience for our patients. We provide the professional guidance and support that you need in order to consider your options and make the choice that is right for you. Tooth extraction requires the use of local anesthesia to numb the area and help you remain comfortable. General anesthesia may be used if more than one tooth is being extracted or if the tooth is impacted.

The tooth is pulled with a rocking motion. If the tooth is impacted, Dr. Graham may need to remove gum tissue and bone in order to remove the tooth. In some cases, teeth are removed in pieces.

While local anesthesia eliminates the physical discomfort, some of our patients do not like the sound of having their teeth extracted. Feel free to bring headphones and listen to music or your favorite audio book during the procedure.

What After-Care for a Tooth Extraction Does Dr. Graham Recommend?

If incisions were used for your tooth extraction, Dr. Graham closes the area with stitches. A blood clot naturally forms in the tooth socket, and Dr. Graham places a gauze pack into the socket to help control any bleeding. You may have some mild discomfort after your tooth extraction, and over-the-counter or prescription medications may be recommended.

Although uncommon, a condition known as “dry socket” may occur when the blood clot in the tooth socket breaks loose. If this occurs, contact our office for a follow-up appointment.
