What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are recommended for patients who have teeth that require additional protection. The crown is customized to fit the shape of your existing tooth and is most often used to protect a weak or cracked tooth. Crowns may also be recommended for cosmetic purposes, such as for a broken tooth or for teeth that cannot be whitened with other procedures. Dental crowns may also be used with other appliances, such as bridges and implants.

What Is the Procedure for Dental Crowns?

Dr. Graham provides professional guidance that helps you choose a crown material that is right for you. Your options may include porcelain, stainless steel, gold, alloys, resin, and ceramic, and you should consider the aesthetics, cost, and durability of each material.

Crowns typically require two appointments with Dr. Graham. During your first appointment, your natural tooth is prepared for the crown, and a mold is taken of the tooth. Dr. Graham may put a temporary crown on your tooth until your permanent crown is ready.

During the second appointment, Dr. Graham checks the permanent crown for fit and may make adjustments to the crown or your natural tooth. The crown is permanently adhered to your natural tooth with a special adhesive.

Dr. Graham may recommend a follow-up visit to check the function, fit, and comfort of the crown.

What After-Care for Dental Crowns Does Dr. Graham Recommend?

Temporary dental crowns require the most after-care because these appliances are not permanently adhered to your natural tooth. You should minimize the amount of chewing on the side of your mouth with the temporary crown. Sticky, chewy foods and hard, crunchy foods should also be avoided, as these can loosen the temporary crown. Dr. Graham will show you how to floss with a temporary crown.

Once you receive your permanent crown, maintain healthy oral hygiene and regular check-ups with Dr. Graham. If you experience any tenderness, pain, difficulty chewing, or other symptoms, contact our office to schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Graham.
